The Senior Director is responsible for the overall strategic development, implementation, monitoring, and accountability of Save the Children’s work in emergency health and nutrition. As a member of the Department of Health and Nutrition (DHN) Senior Leadership Team, the Senior Director is responsible for defining the strategic direction and guiding DHN’s overall efforts to meet the objectives of results for children. The Senior Director is responsible for advancing the emergency-related work in support of the Agency’s strategic plan related to health and nutrition, as well as serving as a key member of the Humanitarian Response Business Team and informing agency-wide emergency directions and programming. At the global level, the Senior Director will serve as a key advocate and spokesperson for Emergency Health and Nutrition (EHN) and humanitarian response on behalf of Save the Children, as well as contributing to the leadership of Save the Children International’s humanitarian programs and implementation. The Senior Director will lead a team of 12 global technical emergency advisors, country level advisors during their time engaged in response, interns and Fellows to ensure quality programming in acute emergency response as well as continued support to countries in post-emergency and transition work. The Senior Director will lead the coordination of humanitarian program advisors working under the International Programs division, and will represent humanitarian program priorities and surge support for SCUS as well as represent humanitarian programs on behalf of SCUS with other members and Save the Children International. In addition to acute emergency response, the Senior Director is responsible for ensuring program quality, overseeing program learning and innovation, leading partnerships with key institutions to forward the state of the art in priority EHN areas, and mobilizing resources towards EHN, DHN and the agency humanitarian objectives.

Responsibilities

Define agency EHN strategy, direction, and objectives in consultation with the AVP DHN, the DHN Senior Leadership Team and the Humanitarian Response Business TeamLead EHN strategic and operational planning, monitor and measure performance, and ensure progress against established objectivesProvide leadership and oversight to ensure that EHN programs are applying state-of-the-art approaches and delivering high quality programs to at the country and global levelDevelop strategies and relationships with country offices and staff that build capacity to design and deliver quality programs, including capacity building opportunities for priority EHN technical areas as well as general EHN orientation to emergency responseMonitor and report upon progress made in relation to the goals and objectives, both at the global and country level, including or overseeing the preparation of new funding applicationsContribute to the technical direction of humanitarian programs and protocols for all members as a key member of an Save the Children International (SCI) humanitarian leadership teamServe as internal and external expert on EHN and represent SC at global fora including workshops, conferences and meetings.Lead development of protocols and tools for humanitarian response in all technical areas that support evidence-based program standards, and that reflect global best practice, and promote widespread application and use of these standards and tools under SCILead agency efforts to define and provide oversight and direction to design, test, and evaluate new approaches in an emergency context to advance the global state of the art in key technical areas for Save the ChildrenIn collaboration with the Public Affairs and Communications Teams, lead development of EHN-related policy and advocacy positions on behalf of SCUS, and support their disseminationProvide leadership to identify and pursue new opportunities in EHN and develop long-term funding strategies and donorsDevelop and sustain donor and partner relationships, including relationships with academic institutions, UN agencies and foundationsProvides management oversight of staff, working closely with the AVP/DHN, including recruitment, mentoring, supervision and routine portfolio and performance reviewsServe as the primary point of contact between the Department of Health and Nutrition and the AVP and Director of the Department of Humanitarian Response. Also closely work with the Senior Director of the Nutrition team of DHN, and other technical AVPs and emergency advisors in IPL.

Requirements

MPH, MS, or PhD and medical degree preferred or equivalent experience in public health and nutritionMinimum of 10 years of experience in international nutrition and public health programming in developing countries, with at least 5 years working in developing countries and significant experience in humanitarian responseExperience in leading or managing large health and nutrition or emergency programs that address the development of state of the art practicesExperience delivering technical assistance, especially in developing country settingsProven record of creating a vision and establishing criteria for making strategic programming decisionsAble to develop and apply monitoring and evaluation plans to determine program results and monitor impactStrong record of fostering new and effective partnerships on an international levelSuccessful experience managing staffAble to develop and oversee implementation of strategic advocacy agenda and plansAble to play lead role in development of effective and responsive project proposalsKnowledge of USAID and other donor policies, strategies, and program prioritiesExperience overseeing technical quality of programs
