Transition Initiatives for Stabilization (TIS) is a USAID-funded programme promoting peace and stabilization in Somalia. Implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) theTIS programme is facilitating over 200 quick-impact activities to promote confidence in government and increase social cohesion in Mogadishu and Somaliland.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
TIS-IOM is seeking a professional and experienced Information Officer. The chosen candidate will:
- Write daily success stories and/or feature articles that clearly illustrate programmatic impact;
- Conduct interviews with partners and beneficiaries, direct and produce multimedia content and take quality photographs;
- Support government institutions by assisting with press releases and media liaison;
- Strategically and creatively design, implement and monitor community events with Government institutions;
- Produce and update a variety of communication products, including posters, slideshows and brochures for the TIS programme and Government institutions;
- Design and implement behaviour change communication campaigns in accordance with government institutions;
- Guide government institutions on developing short documentaries that best showcases their work or promotes community successes and social cohesion;
- Assist with ad-hoc monitoring and evaluation tasks.
Desirable Qualifications and skills:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications and/or public relations or other related field;
- A minimum of four years progressive experience in journalism, event management, public information or multimedia;
- Extensive experience in writing news and feature stories, editing reports and taking quality photographs;
- Proven experience in event management and budgeting;
- Experience of working with Government institutions preferred.
Skills and Competencies:
- Speaks and writes clearly and effectively in English and Somali;
- Solid journalistic skills, including interviewing, writing, proof reading, and editing;
- Acute attention to detail;
- Tailors language, tone, style and format to match cultural context and specific audiences;
- Ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations with target audiences and cultivate productive relationships;
- Acts impartially and works equally with different communities and government officials;
- Listens to, represents and implements community-driven ideas;
- Proven experience in budgeting, design and implementing successful events;
- Fluency in Somali and English essential.
