Grassroots Jerusalem is a Jerusalem based global/local activism platform. We work in Palestinian Communities with local leaders, activists and community based organizations. We help strategically plan and think critically about community development in the communities we work with. GJ works with cutting edge new-media tools while honoring age old Palestinian traditions in Jerusalem. Grassroots Jerusalem is proud to take a role in fighting and ending the Israeli Occupation and oppression by helping to define what the day after will look like. GJ is a connecting link between the global academic, economic, political, social active grassroots movements around the world and the movements in Jerusalem. We are looking for people who can join and help us do our job better.
Job Description and Responsibilities:
One of the guiding values of Grassroots Jerusalem is sustainability and as an organization we are interested in this concept not only in the projects and community initiatives that we support but we also strive to reflect this in the environment we are helping to create in Jerusalem. Therefore, our community center, Markaz Al-Kul, and our Grassroots offices need to physically reflect our commitment to be an environmental friendly organization. The Environmental Research and Outreach Intern will be responsible for implementation of a recycling system, water preservation and the building of our compost, as well as working with our staff and community partners to help increase environmental awareness. In order to make sure that any environmental system Grassroots Jerusalem supports reflects traditional values, the Environmental Research and Outreach intern will be responsible for researching the present challenges that exist that are prohibiting environmentalism in East Jerusalem and work with our local partners to find sustainable methods aimed at returning to traditionally practiced solutions. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the relationship between environmentalism, human rights and social justice.
While all applications will be considered, preference will be given to those that can either commit to 6 months or have prior experience living in the region. Intern selection happens 4 times a year and the start period for each intern cycle is June, September, January, April.
Supervision:
Upon arrival in Jerusalem interns will undergo an orientation designed to not only introduce them to the layout of the city and the technologies essential to their project. The Environmental Research and Outreach Intern will work closely with Grassroots Jerusalem Directors and the Manager of Markaz Al-kul.
Compensation:
As this is an intern position there is no salary, but the Grassroots Jerusalem staff is committed to helping their interns take advantage of the variety of funding they qualify for through their educational institutions. Interns will be responsible for securing their own housing during their time in Jerusalem. Communication and work related travel expenses will be reimbursed during your stay.
