Ethiopia: Assistant Manager for the Ethiopian Education Foundation

Organization: Ethiopian Education Foundation (EEF)
Country: Ethiopia
Closing date: 30 Sep 2013

The Ethiopian Education Foundation grants scholarships to brilliant, underprivileged teenagers. The scholarships include 4 years of tuition to a private high school (9th-12th grade) in Addis Ababa, school uniforms, school materials, and full boarding at our hostel.
The hostel includes a library, a computer room with internet access, comfortable study areas and other multi-purpose rooms, a student-run garden, and a large dining room and kitchen.
Our scholars are selected from a pool of government “feeder schools” and local charity organizations. All students come from difficult circumstances - either orphans or living in slums or on the streets. In all aspects they represent the diversity of Ethiopia.

Each student is mentored through the 4 year program by their individually matched sponsors. This personal connection provides the students with a sense of security and, along with living in the hostel, encourages them to excel in their studies.
All 88 EEF graduates have gone on to university, either in Ethiopia or abroad (New York University, Helsinki University), and many go on to study medicine.
We currently have 29 boys and 29 girls living in the hostel, 14 students living outside the hostel, and 41 university students still receiving sponsor support through EEF.

Living and working in Addis Ababa, with a hostel full of 58 teenagers requires authority, creativity, flexibility, and drive. We are looking for a strong multi-tasker who can motivate the students academically and socially, while contributing to the managerial team. • Monitor finances to ensure needs are met while keeping costs low
• Manage and coordinate building maintenance
• Create and oversee extracurricular activities (ex. Football, Yoga, Drama, Speech, etc)
• Oversee local staff including two cooks and volunteer activities
• Engage local businesses and NGOs to create possibilities for work placement
• Compose regular reports to inform the London team of our progress

An ideal candidate will have:

• Management experience

• Willingness to live and work in an area with minimal resources
• University degree in a related field (International Relations, Public Policy, Education, Social Work, Psychology, Anthropology, etc.)

Requirements: Fluency in English (both written and speaking); strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills; a passion for education.

This is a minimum 12 month contract to start immediately – no later than November 1, 2013. EEF provides a private en-suite bedroom and covers three meals a day in the hostel. The Assistant Manager also receives a small monthly stipend.
