The Canadian Red Cross Society (CRCS) is a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world.
CRCS is currently seeking experienced Pediatricians to be part of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) roster of the Canadian Red Cross. ERU Delegates are trained and ready to be deployed for 4 to 6 weeks on short notice in the event of an overseas emergency.
Responsibilities
Provide medical care for patients in an ERU setting.
Support the establishment and management of general medical and paediatric care, as required, provided by inpatient and/or outpatient departments in collaboration with nursing and medical team members.
Carry out ward rounds and consultations.
Plan and support basic curative and preventive health activities together with the host National Society and / or local health authorities. This may include:
diagnosis and treatment of common diseases according to WHO standard case definitions and management protocols, using the IEHK.
immunisation of children under 5
paediatric care
nutritional surveillance and therapeutic feeding
To supervise local staff and ensure that all shifts are covered.
Organize and participate in mobile clinics in collaboration with other ERU team members, as required.
To support the capacity of the host National Society and develop skills where possible.\
Essential Requirements
Professional qualification and certification as nurse and/or medical doctor with at least three years pediatric experience.
Can both deliver and supervise care delivered in low-resource settings.
Comfortable with basic wound care and care of post-surgical patients.
Experience of managing & supporting staff.
Experience in living or working in a cultural context other than their own.
Competent in computer use (Windows, Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, word-processing, e-mail).
Valid international driving license (manual gears).
Capable of decision-making in conditions of uncertainty.
Be innovative and at ease in problem solving.
Capable of handling extreme stress, change and situations of insecurity.
Able to leave for four to six weeks on very short notice.
Fluent in English.
Desirable Requirements
Fluency in more than one language – including French, Spanish, Arabic and/or Russian
