PROGRAM SUMMARY:
International Medical Corps is currently implementing mental health and psychosocial assistance activities for Iraqi refugees and displaced Syrians in Damascus, through case management services and psychosocial activities. The Mental Health and Psychosocial Officer will support these activities and others, as needed.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Join or initiate interagency coordination mechanisms for the provision of mental health and psychosocial support (IASC Reference group in coordination with IMC Mental Health and Psychosocial Advisor)a. Share relevant information. b. Plan joint assessments and response strategies
- Collaborate with existing government structures and local authorities organizing MHPSS activities
- Identify or work with suitable local partner organizations and institutions for joint MHPSS work
- Develop the strategy and mechanisms to integrate a MH/psychosocial component into IMC programmes in keeping with IASC guidelines of mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies
- Identify and where appropriate collaborate with existing formal and informal community leaders and service providers
- Provide mental health services and psychosocial support as needed to affected population (precise programming depending on identified needs, existing services and capacities and actions of other agencies)
- Train selected staff in key aspects of psychological first aid and relevant aspects of IASC guidelines
- Initiate training of identified staff in appropriate skills ( e.g frontline mental health care for PHC workers, community psychosocial support skills )
- Assist with the development of proposals
- Hire and build capacity of national staff to implement MHPSS programmes
Qualifications
- The qualified candidate will be a mental health and psychosocial professional with RN, Ph.D., MD, Masters or equivalent degree with 3+ years clinical experience
- Experience in coordination and technical assistance provision at the level of working group/task force or equivalent
- Training and supervision experience required
- Strong organizational and supervisory skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work within different cultural environments
- Honest, hard working and a self-motivated person
- Ability to work within a team structure or in isolation, flexible, and can cope with stressful workloads and working with limited resources
- Ability to travel on short notice to project sites by car, boat or air
Language:
- A good command of verbal and written English
- Command of Arabic language preferred
