Background
The APT is a Geneva-based organisation working for the prevention of torture worldwide. The APT’s vision is a world free from torture where the rights and dignity of all persons deprived of liberty are respected. Our mission is to enable actors worldwide to effectively prevent torture and ill-treatment. We do this through four combined preventive strategies:

1 Promoting transparency and monitoring of places of detention to reduce the risk of torture and ill-treatment on persons deprived of their liberty.

2 Advocate for legal and policy frameworks so that torture and other forms of ill-treatment are criminalised and prevented in law and practice.

3 Strengthen capacities of torture prevention actors and facilitate exchanges to foster the identification and replication of good practices in detention issues.

4 Contribute to inform public policy debates so that torture can be universally rejected.

In October 2012, the APT and the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) have started to implement a three-year EU-funded project on “Enhancing the role of African NHRIs in the prevention of torture”. The project entails a series of capacity strengthening activities on thematic issues, such as monitoring places of detention. All the activities are composed of an online course and a subsequent face-to-face workshop.

For more information on the project, see the description available here:
http://www.apt.ch/en/strengthening-national-human-rights-institutions/

The project is currently approaching its second activity, the Blended Learning Training on “Monitoring Places of Detention”. The training will target selected English speaking National Human Rights Institutions and the related face-to-face workshop will take place in Uganda on 19-22 November 2013.
