Job Description:
Located in Ottawa or Mississauga (Ottawa preferred) the Senior Policy Advisor, Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Affairs is a member of a dynamic team of advocacy and education professionals, and reports to the Director, Policy.
The overall objectives of the Senior Policy Advisor are to:
• Lead the development and implementation of World Vision Canada’s peacebuilding and humanitarian affairs advocacy strategy; engage various key publics – especially Parliamentarians and other policy makers– with evidence-based, child focused recommendations drawn from World Vision programming in priority “fragile” states, such as Afghanistan, Sudan, Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo;
• Collaborate with World Vision International colleagues in support of policy and programmatic initiatives that address the rights of children affected by conflict;
• Support World Vision Canada’s public relations team in sensitizing Canadians to the issues affecting children in fragile states and policy focused solutions
• Support capacity building of World Vision partner offices in the area of peacebuilding in fragile states.
• Advise and brief senior World Vision Canada leaders on priority peacebuilding and humanitarian issues.
Job Requirements:
• Knowledge of key issues affecting the security and well being of children in fragile state contexts
• Knowledge of core issues impacting the relief to development transition.
• Knowledge of roles of Non Governmental Organizations in promoting peacebuilding and humanitarian affairs through work with communities and through engagement with government
• Knowledge of how Canadian policy and diplomacy can reinforce peacebuilding and reconstruction internationallyText with
line break• Very strong people skills - ability to work with others with diverse backgrounds, ability to build consensus, ability lead collaboratively
• Ability to write clear and succinctly for public, political and policy audiences
• Ability listen effectively to and analyze political discourse
• Ability to communicate complex topics clearly and compellingly to a diverse range of public audiences
• Experience drafting briefing notes, research reports, research summaries, policy recommendations
• Bilingualism in French and English will be considered a very strong asset for this position. Ability to speak Spanish is also an asset
• Ability to travel domestically between Ottawa and Toronto required
• Ability to travel internationally potentially for over a week may be required once or twice a year
• Master's degree in Political Science, International Relations or related discipline with experience in peacebuilding, conflict studies, humanitarian and relief to development issues.
