Background on the projectWCH has been working in South Sudan since 2005. In 2010, as an attempt to encourage social activation and intergenerational dialogue between youth and community in Yei County, WCH started implementing a participatory video project, in collaboration with FPU (then still RNTC). The children and young people involved in the project grow up in a community that has lost all its community feeling. Through the war, all community systems were disrupted and broken up. Families and children fend for themselves and live from day to day hoping that someday they will have a better life. This means children have become more of a nuisance than an addition to society. Children cannot stand up for their rights or even start a basic conversation with their parents about their needs, as parents do not see the value in listening to children and young people.

Project informationThe project objective is to empower children and youth to raise awareness about issues they would like to change in their communities and become active agents of change. This participatory video project aims to use video as a tool to encourage discussion between generations about important child rights issues identified by the children. Due to the lack of communication between CYP and adults, it has been difficult to address child rights problems and this has created a negative environment in the home.

Need for the evaluationThe participatory video project is well liked and well received and War Child is increasingly pressured to expand it to reach more young people. In preparation for such a possible expansion and with an acute awareness on the need to ensure real outcomes for young people, we propose to first assess the current project and its results, so clear future pathways can be drawn based on the findings of an evaluation. In addition, this is an innovative project that could be expanded beyond South Sudan. It is important to understand the impact and what made the project a success before developing a possible replicable model. Please check the ToR for more detailed info.

The safety of children is essential to War Child. War Child does not tolerate or accept any form of abuse. This subject is addressed in our recruitment and selection procedures.
