About us

ODI (www.odi.org.uk) aims to inspire and inform policy and practice to reduce poverty by locking together high-quality applied research and practical policy advice.

ODI is conducting a multi-year project building and communicating evidence for ‘Development Progress’. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the project started in June 2011 and extends to 2015. The project aims to understand, measure and communicate what has worked in development and why by examining progress across countries, and within sectors.

Recent project highlights include:

  • Initial analysis of the different methods for measuring progress, with an introductory Project Note comparing development performance in East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa
  • Selection of and research begun on 25 country case-studies of progress, including pilots researching maternal health in Nepal and post-primary education in Mongolia
  • A series of blogs, working papers and events exploring progress in education, employment and global Aid for Trade.

A Research Officer is required to contribute to project research, engage with policymakers in research and advisory processes, and disseminate results. This role is particularly focused on quantitative analysis across the range of planned research outputs.

About youThe successful candidate will have:

• Degree and post-graduate degree in economics, development studies or similar• Familiarity with quantitative research methods and good knowledge of STATA statistical software.• Active knowledge of key international institutions in the development sector
• Active knowledge of current debates around the measurement of progress and specialisation in one of Development Progress’ research focus areas• Significant experience in an international policy development research environment, i.e. policy-oriented research, demonstrated by publications and reports • Experience of writing to publication standard demonstrated by publications and reports • Experience in producing research outputs in a short period of time and for different audiences• Some developing-country work experience • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to negotiate successfully and cultural awareness• Experience communicating research results demonstrated through coneference and event presentations and online engagement• Multitasking skills, with ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
