The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. We are currently seeking a Junior Communications and Research Consultant for the WFP Professional Staff Association. The position will be based at our Headquarters in Rome, Italy, for an initial contract period of 6 months.

Background

The WFP Professional Staff Association (PSA) was established in September 2004 and a Recognition Agreement with WFP management was signed in April 2007. The PSA is a voluntary organization of WFP International Professional staff choosing to associate, irrespective of their duty station, Headquarters or Field, to promote and safeguard i) the rights, interests and dignity of professional staff, ii) the overall general welfare of staff, iii) the conditions of service, and iv) fairness and justice in the treatment of staff.

The Association works to promote and to maintain continuous dialogue with Management on behalf of Staff and to ensure that their concerns are taken into account in management and policy decisions. The Association is governed by an elected Staff Council of eleven members and an Executive Committee of five members, who are elected from amongst the Staff Council.

Responsibilities

The Consultant will report to the PSA Legal Officer and be responsible for the following key duties:

  • Attend all PSA related meetings and summarize main findings;
  • Assist in the organization of the Annual General Meeting and other PSA events;
  • With the guidance of the PSA President and the Legal Officer, facilitate communications with members, including drafting of correspondence and assisting in the preparation of information Bulletins, Newsletters and other communications;
  • Update and manage the PSA website, including updating the homepage and the creation of new pages;
  • As requested, brief staff members on the work of the PSA, with a view to encouraging wider membership;
  • Ensure that the PSA membership lists are kept up-to-date, for communication purposes;
  • Manage PSA accounts and prepare monthly funding statements; serve as the point of contact with the PSA bank and TPA counterparts; prepare annual statements for review by the Audit Committee;
  • Prepare periodic reports, including tables, charts, etc.;
  • Undertake research on HR manuals, guidance, directives, etc. and provide summaries to the Staff Council and the Legal Officer;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience Required

Education:

  • University degree in Law, Communications, Political Sciences, Business Management/Administration or other related fields.

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of postgraduate professional experience working in a complex organization on administrative, human resources or legal issues;
  • Experience in organizing events/trainings and/or in communication is an asset.

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Project, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook) and other standard office software packages and systems;
  • Proficiency in Liferay web content management is an assest;
  • Knowledge of FAO/WFP Rules and Manual is desirable;
  • Knowledge of WFP’s programmes and work is desirable.

  • Ability to understand and establish priorities and work by objectives;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Ability to deal patiently and tactfully with people of different national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality when working with personal and sensitive issues.

Language:

  • Working knowledge (proficiency/level C) of English.
