BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
SCOPE OF WORK:
The Baltimore Resettlement Concierge Intern is responsible for assisting the Receptionist with desk coverage, supporting clients of the Baltimore Resettlement Center (BRC) and helping to foster an environment in which both clients and staff thrive in productivity.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Greet and network with refugee and asylee clientele
• Assist the clients and ensure a smooth flow of the waiting area by determining client’s needs
• Provide relevant information in regards to the BRC, surrounding Baltimore communities and the state of Maryland
• Decipher and determining emergency and non-emergency circumstances (medical, eviction, legal trouble, etc)
• Schedule appointments and inform clients of their case manager’s weekly schedules
• Refer clients to useful resources in the local community (DSS, WIC, etc)
• Maintain tidiness in the lobby area and the Children’s Corner during slow periods
• Keep a log book of emergency circumstances concerning clients
• Make Extended Services Case Management resource book accessible to all clients
• Front desk coverage for the Receptionist when attending meetings/at lunch
• Sort mail and ensure it reaches the intended recipient
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Work well and thrive within a multicultural environment, learning to work effectively with populations with language barriers
- Being able to master a high-paced work environment and execute multiple tasks efficiently and accurately
- Assessing the administrative and operational needs of the office to ensure a smooth flow of business for all programs, departments, and agencies
REQUIREMENTS:
• High School Graduate
• Familiarity with Public Relations
• Valid Driver’s License
• Experience in a multi-cultural environment
• Experience with Microsoft Suite
TIME COMMITMENT:
• Summer interns are required to work at least 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for the entire summer. Interns who can intern full-time (40 hours a week) are strongly preferred.
• Fall and Spring interns are required to work at least 15 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of 12 weeks in the Fall and Spring
