Israel: Law clerk (USA related cases) DV Lottery Project
Country: Israel
Closing date: 08 Sep 2013
Seeking a law-student summer intern who has completed 1L year or an appropriate candidate who has worked as a paralegal/in a legal environment in English. It would be ideal for the clerk to have access to research resources and be prepared to work in a dynamic environment where solutions require critical thinking and problem solving. Fluency in Arabic or Tigrinya can substitute for legal experience/qualifications.
Description: The Clerk will work directly under an American attorney to assist in the Diversity Lottery Immigrant Visa project as well as related immigration cases impacting asylum seekers/refugees with connections to the USA. The main part of the project involves a 1.5 year cycle which includes:
Registration, involving a temporary staff of 70+ volunteers who process 1000+ asylum seekers over an intensive series of weeks in October. The clerk will assist in organizing and preparing for this. There is also the possibility of designing a community-based empowerment model, which could serve as the bulk of the clerkship if candidate chooses.
Case preparation, involving interviews, research, form preparation, and file organization. The clerk will interview asylum seekers and their families with an eye for legal issues that might arise in their cases – consulting with refugee status determination staff and Israeli attorneys to address unique issues particular to the refugee population.
Research, to assist in consular immigration practice which involves practice before the US Department of State, navigating both legal options as well as policy and political options to address the issues of asylum seekers and refugees who have connections to the USA.
Case management until the interview stage, which involves preparation and obtainment of documents, affidavits, and evidence particular to the asylum-seeker/refugee community. The clerk will manage correspondence with the existing set of clients as well as assist with walk-in client issues.
The work will be all encompassing and offer the candidate the opportunity to make decisions under the guidance of an attorney in various areas of practice related to on-the-ground solutions for asylum seekers and refugees.
There is no funding available for this position, but there is a focus on partnership with the supervising attorney which makes the experience potentially more valuable than the usual hierarchical internship.
