By mid-2013 most of our international programmes will be delivered through a merged operation with 14 000 staff, managed through seven regional hubs and reporting to a relatively small, central office. The role
This role is an exciting and challenging opportunity to lead the overall humanitarian strategy and operations for the Save the Children movement. The Humanitarian Director will drive our ‘dual mandate’ across all parts of our global organisation, members and country programs, and lead on all matters related to the humanitarian portfolio.
Save the Children is a $1.6billion agency working in 120 countries, with all our international programs now successfully transitioned to into a single line management structure, with a clear in-built humanitarian imperative. We have made sustained and significant investments in humanitarian capacity and last year responding to over 70 emergencies around the world, in each case aiming to reach over 20% of affected populations. We are committed to doing what it takes to take next step-up, harnessing the full power of the Save the Children movement – partnering, innovating, advocating and going to scale to achieve more as a humanitarian leader. An exceptional Humanitarian Director will be pivotal to us achieving this.
The Humanitarian Director will ensure that our humanitarian goals are achieved in all responses, and, at the same time further our global representation in inter-agency for a. Beyond excellence in humanitarian response, the Humanitarian Director will raise our global capabilities for early warning and emergency preparedness and build a future-orientated, innovation focussed humanitarian leadership team and programming culture.
This role is a unique opportunity to shape the future of Humanitarian preparedness and response, both internally in Save the Children, and, more importantly, across the humanitarian sector.
Qualifications and experience
* Significant senior level leadership and management experience in a large and complex humanitarian and/or crisis management agency
* Significant humanitarian management track record including field operations experience in a senior position in both complex and rapid onset emergencies
* Substantial knowledge of international humanitarian systems, institutions and donors, and of procedures, accountability frameworks and best practices in emergency management
* Robust experience in developing and implementing organisational vision and strategies
* The highest level of expertise in representation and negotiation with governments/donors and international agencies
* Demonstrated ability to thrive in a matrix management environment and leading groups in collaborative decision making, problem solving and work planning
* Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching
* Solid project management skills related to organisational development projects and international, cross funct ional teams with a proven history of delivering results
* Excellent dispute resolution, facilitation and team building skills
* Experience of building personal networks at senior levels, resulting in significant new opportunities for the organisation
* Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in
* Models humanitarian best practices, and the leadership behaviours outlined in Save the Children’s key humanitarian guidance document
