Summary:

The Project Director will be involved in setting up and overseeing several field-based programs to conduct systematic media monitoring of hate speech. He/She will coordinate and communicate with partner organizations to ensure smooth running of the project; will coordinate with USAID on lessons learnt from field based programs; manage the work of consultants developing media toolkit on conflict-sensitive journalism; and white paper on the use and abuse of media in vulnerable societies. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the role of media in conflict, a strong media development background, and project management, and partnership building experience. The position is based in Washington DC.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, other duties may be assigned:

• Work with USAID and local and international partners to identify locations of the media monitoring hubs.

• Identify, vet and sign partnership agreements with local partner organizations and help each partner organization develop a methodology for monitoring of hate speech in the media in their country.

• Oversee the work of local partner organizations, provide programmatic advice, and ensures that the project delivers outputs in a timely manner.

• Work with local organizations to conduct systematic media monitoring for hate speech, produce regular reports of their findings and develop a workable model for an early-warning system for context-specific interventions.

• Oversee the development of a comprehensive toolkit for journalists on conflict-sensitive journalism, with a focus on atrocity prevention.

• Coordinate the revision, research and update of an Internews paper on use and abuse of media in vulnerable societies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least 5 years of media, media development, communications research, or project management experience

• Experience working outside the United States, especially in conflict and high risk environments

• Experience working in a humanitarian environment, preferably with media, NGOs, or the UN

• Thematic knowledge of hate speech and atrocity prevention

• Experience managing USG funded projects

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team

• Ability and willingness to travel, mainly to Internews operations overseas

• Fluency in written and spoken English required

• University degree and relevant study

• Excellent academic research and writing skills

• Ability to think under pressure and to make decisions fast as the situation requires

• Excellent communication skills with an ability to deliver key messages succinctly and timely

• Legally authorized to work in the United States
