For the past 20 years we have strengthened rural livelihoods through environmental awareness, training, technology transfer and innovative humanitarian projects in pursuit of a peaceful, self-reliant, and greener future. At present, Adeso has programs in Somalia, Kenya and South Sudan.

Established as a U.S. 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt charity, Adeso USA supports Adeso through fundraising and donor outreach, along with support in finance, communications, government affairs and other areas. The Adeso USA staff and Board work to raise, administer, and grant funds for Adeso to carry out its critical work in Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan. Adeso USA works closely with Adeso in Kenya and the Kenyan Board of Directors to identify institutional priorities and funding needs. Adeso USA also supports public advocacy on policy issues of concern, through tax-exempt educational and outreach work.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Development Intern will be a six-month long, 2-3 day/week unpaid position, preferably for academic credit at a partnering institution. Interns will gain valuable knowledge and insights into the fundraising and communications arm of an Africa-based international development and humanitarian organization, including detailed knowledge of fieldwork and programs, while building skills needed in a not-for-profit environment in research, writing and editing, databases, and related areas. Each intern will be expected to manage his/her own projects – i.e. researching potential funders for a humanitarian assistance program in Somalia, for instance – while also completing tasks under supervision and guidance from Adeso staff.

SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Fundraising research 1.1 Gain in-depth knowledge of key Adeso program and issue areas1.2 Research potential funding sources (foundations, corporations, individuals, public sources) using Adeso-provided research tools and public sources1.3 Match potential funding sources with Adeso programs and issues, based on acquired knowledge and research1.4 Summarize variety of funding opportunities for use in grant proposals

Donor Engagement2.1 Enter data in development database (DonorPerfect) and track engagements with donors2.2 Record and monitor pending deadlines for applications 2.3 Engage with potential donors on phone, email and in person as needed2.4 Represent Adeso at events as needed 2.5 Support engagement with Board meeting/logistics when needed

  3. Writing and Editing Support3.1 Assist with writing, editing, and proofreading of grant proposals and reports on humanitarian assistance, international development, and related topics3.2 Contribute to development of marketing materials (i.e., text, design, layout) in conjunction with Director of Resource Development and Communications team in Nairobi 3.3 Write/edit materials for online uses, i.e. blogs, email appeals, etc.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Required:• University student or recent graduate in international development, nonprofit management, marketing, or another related field• Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet strict deadlines and maintain meticulous attention to detail and confidentiality where necessary• Excellent computer skills and comfort in a range of data systems• Excellent written and speaking communications skills • Able to initiate and maintain good lines of communications with colleagues and others, including those working overseas• Complete comfort in Microsoft Office
