Grassroots Jerusalem is a Jerusalem based global/local activism platform. We work in Palestinian Communities with local leaders, activists and community based organizations. We help strategically plan and think critically about community development in the communities we work with. GJ works with cutting edge new-media tools while honoring age old Palestinian traditions in Jerusalem. GJ is a connecting link between the global academic, economic, political, social active grassroots movements around the world and the movements in Jerusalem. Job Description and Responsibilities:
Grassroots Jerusalem has been working on the further development of our network (www.grassrootsalquds.net) project designed to support East Jerusalem community members, community based organizations and grassroots activists. In addition to helping to promote Grassroots Jerusalem advocacy messaging our online presence, the Social-Media and Communications intern will be part of a team working to increase awareness of the challenges that face community members, as well as promote community based initiatives through the use of multiple social media in order to bring about a positive change in Jerusalem. The Social-Media and Communications intern will be responsible for helping to promote both the activities of Grassroots Jerusalem, our community center Markaz Al Kul and help to maintain and expand Grassroots Jerusalem’s current online presence. A background in Journalism, blogging, photography and video are required, as well as an interest in human rights and social justice.
This position requires strong writing and communication skills, as well as the ability to quickly respond to events as they happen in Jerusalem. Additional skills may include flash or HTML5 programming, graphic design, audio/video editing, etc. would be beneficial. This is a great opportunity for someone who is tech-savvy, knowledgeable and interested in open source tools and new media possibilities with community development and social change in mind. While all applications will be considered, preference will be given to those that can either commit to 6 months or have prior experience living in the region. Intern selection happens 4 times a year and the start period for each intern cycle is June, September, January, April.
Supervision:
Upon arrival in Jerusalem interns will undergo an orientation designed to not only introduce them to the layout of the city and the technologies essential to their project. The Social-Media and Communications Interns will work closely with our Communications Officer as well as our Advocacy Officer.
Compensation:
As this is an intern position there is no salary, but the Grassroots Jerusalem staff is committed to helping their interns take advantage of the variety of funding they qualify for through their educational institutions. Interns will be responsible for securing their own housing during their time in Jerusalem. Communication and work related travel expenses will be reimbursed during your stay.
