1) Rationale and context of the assignment: UNICEF NYHQ Internet, Broadcast and Image Section/Division of Communication is seeking a Taxonomy / Search Specialist to support on-going development and maintenance of the core digital ontology model for classification and tagging of Web content and media files, as well as search engine optimization for both UNICEF’s internal website search engine and external search engines. This position may also support taxonomy development with internal partner groups.

2) Responsibilities:• Develop/maintain taxonomies and ontology describing the work of UNICEF in digital media.• Provide project coordination within DOC/IBIS to manage collaboration between Web, photo archivist and video archivist to agree on standards, to improve metadata on databases and to implement taxonomy for digital assets.• Support maintenance and application of the Smartlogic Semaphore Ontology platform, as integrated with UNICEF’s Web CMS and search engine.• Participate in training.• Coordinate with Web producers and editors.• Coordinate with appropriate partners to support metadata schema for Digital Asset Management (DAM) System for video, audio, photography, publications, branding, design, and document assets.• Coordinate daily support, maintenance and regular updates for controlled vocabularies, including taxonomy and search dictionaries, and dependent search features like navigators, with DOC/IBIS Web developer for Web CMS and ITSSD/KMS programmer for enterprise search platform.• Collaborate with DPP/Knowledge Management Section and other interdivisional partners as requested on taxonomy-related issues and the Smart-Logic taxonomy tool.• Report regularly on search logs and related web metrics tools, including search terms and usage trends.• Provide occasional support for search and taxonomy features to UNICEF language sites and field office sites.• Coordinate testing on search upgrades, including usability testing and relevance testing.• Assemble related links for web stories and integrate with web page production workflow.• Work on UNICEF premises in New York HQ. • May be asked to work weekends and holidays, as required.

3) Tangible and measurable outputs of work assignment: Creation, development and maintenance of metadata schemes and controlled vocabularies as needed to enhance and support UNICEF Web site and WeShare digital asset management search and retrieval. Coordination of support for these within DOC/IBIS and greater collaboration in these areas with our partners. Search engine optimization for both internal and external searches.

4) Reports To: Chief, UNICEF NYHQ Internet, Broadcast and Image Section/Division of Communication.

5) Qualifications or specialized knowledge/ experience required:• Preferred: Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science, information management or related field; knowledge of information science principles and practices; although hands-on practical experience in any of these will be valued.• Practical experience with search engines and/or developing and managing taxonomies for large quantities of information.• Experience with metadata schema and classification schema.• A good understanding of the principles of information architecture.• Experience with content management systems• Experience in search engine optimization (SEO) is desirable.• Experience with taxonomy management tools is desirable.• Experience working with web metrics and analytics is desirable.• Editorial experience, including audio, video or image content, is desirable.• Fluency or working knowledge of languages other than English is desirable.• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.• Resourceful, self-motivated and proactive problem solving skills.• Familiarity of non-profit and/or NGO content preferred.
