Speak Spanish? Looking for a life-changing three months in Bolivia? Want to join with other young people from around the world and volunteer as an agent of positive change? Our overseas volunteering scheme ‘International Citizen Service’ (ICS) is for you.

Funded by the Department for International Development, volunteering as an ICS Team Leader gives 23+ year olds from across the UK the opportunity to make a difference to the world’s most marginalised communities, whilst gaining transferable skills and invaluable experience.

You will be paid a local living allowance whilst overseas, and all placements are fully-funded through the Department for International Development so the volunteer incurs no costs.

Team leaders play an important role liaising with their volunteer teams, the local partner organisations, and International Service staff. They lead successive teams of UK volunteers aged 18-25, supporting each team to plan, monitor and report on their project.

UNU-EHS, established in December 2003, addresses the risk and vulnerability aspects of human security and the consequences of complex environmental hazards for sustainable development. The work of UNU-EHS helps to improve the in-depth understanding of the cause effect relationships to find ways to reduce risks and vulnerabilities. The Institute supports policymakers and decision makers with evidence-based research and information.
The Environmental Migration, Social Vulnerability & Adaptation Section – EMSVA- undertakes empirical research on environmentally induced migration and social vulnerability. The section also addresses climate change adaptation including a range of activities such as disaster risk reduction and insurance-related approaches to help vulnerable countries and communities.

Responsibilities:
•Providing literature reviews and support for the organization of the Catalyst Winter Academy which will take place in Mexico in December 2013 (http://www.ehs.unu.edu/article/read/call-for-applications-catalyst-local...) as well as its follow-up (eg. conference proceedings);
•Providing literature reviews and support for the organization of a workshop to be held in Guatemala in early 2014 as well as for its follow-up (eg. conference proceedings);
•Supporting the EMSVA section in proposals writing, “Where the Rain Falls” project follow-up, Climate Change and Migration - COST Action IS1101 and other upcoming projects;
•Translating project and research documents and outputs from English to Spanish;
•Developing and updating literature databases;
•Reviewing literature both in English and in Spanish;
•Any other duties as may be assigned or required.

Qualifications and Requirements:
Field of Study: Under graduate/Postgraduate studies in Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Migration Studies or other Social Sciences;

Essential Skills and attributes:
•Excellent Spanish (preferably native speaker) and English language abilities, both spoken and written;
•Good knowledge of office programs.

Desired Skills:
•Knowledge of social impacts of climate change and/or migration patterns in Central America;
•Knowledge of disaster risk reduction and local/community-based adaptation to climate change;
•Experience in organizing workshops/conferences;
•Knowledge of other UN languages will be considered an asset.

Duration:
The successful candidate will be based at UNU-EHS in Bonn on a full-time basis for a contractual period ranging between 3-6 months. The internship is not remunerated.

Starting Date:
As soon as possible.
