About the role

Save the Children Australia operate in Australia delivering domestic programs and in the Pacific region, including Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. We also support programs in Bangladesh, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Ethiopia, India and Indonesia.

The Country Director in Vanuatu is a member of Save the Children Australia’s Programs Team, reporting to the Head of International Development Programs who is based in the Melbourne Office. This is a crucial role providing strategic direction and guidance to ensure effective programming in a complex and changing environment. The purpose of the this role is the leadership of an in-country programs team to develop and implement Save the Children’s portfolio of programs across Vanuatu, delivering immediate and lasting improvements to children’s lives. Save the Children Australia works closely with other members of Save the Children International to achieve this end result.The Country Director is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic program development, management of staff (currently approximately 65 staff based in-country), budgets (currently approx. AUD5-6 million), safety and security (including work relating to Save the Children International Cooperation in Emergencies), external relationships (including donors and Save the Children partners), management of resources, quality and risk. This position is instrumental in assisting managers to implement country and thematic strategies for Vanuatu and support program manager’s responsibility to build national staff capacities in program management, financial management, reporting, grant management and advocacy.

Selection Criteria

• Extensive demonstrated experience in designing, developing and managing development projects in an international context.• Demonstrated experience in monitoring project implementation, technically and financially.• Demonstrated experience developing proposals and securing donor funds.• Sound understanding and experience of the child rights approach to development.• Experience working with and securing funds from a range of international donors, including AusAID.• Experience of leading, developing and implementing strategy at national level or equivalent.• Experience of reviewing strategy and managing change effectively.• Experience of managing organisational risks in large scale Programs/operations.• Experience of managing and developing large teams of international and national professional staff in often distant locations, and delivering significant results.• Experience of successfully influencing other large organisations to change their policies or priorities, and of effective media representation.• Experience of building personal external networks at senior level, resulting in securing significant new opportunities for the organisation.• Experience of managing and shaping large scale income and expenditure budgets to deliver greater efficiency and effectiveness, and of strengthening implementation of financial control processes.
