The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) is seeking a part-time consultant to serve as a Project Editor for the Eurasia team.
ICNL facilitates and supports the development of civil society and the freedom of association. We provide technical assistance to help with the creation and improvement of laws and regulatory systems supporting civil society organizations (CSOs). Working with local partners, we have provided cutting-edge technical assistance to over 100 countries including all countries of the former Soviet Union.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Project Editor will report to ICNL’s Legal Advisor for Eurasia in Washington, DC. The position will consist primarily of editing documents, most of which are produced by non-native English speakers. Large projects will include editing and formatting analyses and assessments of CSO-related legislation, programmatic reports, and updates to donors. The Project Editor will also be asked to assist with various other documents such as trip reports and correspondence with donors. The Project Editor will be required to communicate with the authors of the documents to be edited and other Eurasia team members in order to obtain clarifications.
Editing will include review and revision for accuracy and consistency of content, clarity, proper English usage, including style, grammar, spelling, punctuation, presentation, and consistent citation format.
The Project Editor will also be asked to contribute to the development of a writing guide for ICNL’s programs.
Applicants must have flexible schedules. On average, the Project Editor will receive between 20-40 hours of work per month. The position will guarantee at least 20 hours of work during each of the following reporting periods: January 1-30; April 1-30; July 1-30; and October 1-30. The Project Editor is required to be available during these times. There will also be other large editing projects that will occur throughout the year. Examples of such projects are included below and ICNL will inform the Project Editor in advance of these projects.
• Updating analysis of citizen participation law- 20 pages, February 2014
• CSO law textbook—190 pages
• Brochures on entrepreneurial income and on audits, approximately 50 pages total, April- June 2014
• Upcoming law on public councils – 15-20 pages; March – April 2014
• Upcoming law on charities – 20-20 pages; - April-May 2014
• Draft brochure on CSO inspection by state agencies – 15-20 pages; - June-July 2014
• Guide on Social Service Provision- 50 pages, June-Sept 2014
In addition, the Project Editor will be asked to be ‘on-call’ for an average of approximately 5 hours per week to assist with editing tasks as they arise.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Fluency in English and superior editing and writing skills are key requirements. The Project Editor must also demonstrate organizational skills and the ability to work under tight deadlines.
Familiarity with civil society and legal issues, knowledge of Russian, and of the Eurasia region is a plus.
COMPENSATION
Competitive hourly rates based on experience and qualifications.
