The Opportunity
The Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) seeks a Disaster Management Analyst to serve on the organization’s program team. The person in this position will be charged with daily monitoring and tracking of domestic and international disasters, liaising with global relief and development organizations, and writing content extensively for the CDP website (www.disasterphilanthropy.org) and other media, such as newsletters and partner communications, about the status of disaster relief and recovery activities.

Responsibilities
• Undertake daily monitoring and tracking of domestic and international disasters, including on the weekends if necessary. Be ready to assume major responsibilities when a disaster strikes.
• Research, analyze, and report on ongoing disasters for a variety of media, including CDP’s web site and newsletters, as well fulfilling partner requirements.
• Keep content in Disaster Profiles fresh. (See examples here: http://disasterphilanthropy.org/where/current-disasters/) Make recommendations on when to change CDP’s level of responses/effort expended for each disaster.
• Identify and research organizations, such as NGOs and funders (both domestically and internationally) working in the disaster management and humanitarian assistance space
• Capture best practices, lessons learned, and standards across the philanthropic and disaster management landscape and write about that existing literature for web inclusion.
• Undertake research to understand which communities and individuals are most vulnerable in a disaster context as well as to identify best strategies to minimize their disaster risk.
• Assist the Vice President by providing intelligence and guidance in all grant making and grants management efforts.
• Serve as CDP’s blog producer regarding disasters, including coordinating blogs with the VP and the CEO, and sourcing guest blogs from experts in the field.
• Participate in weekly team meetings, strategy sessions with the communications teams and other meetings, as requested.
• Identify gaps in editorial coverage and make suggestions about disasters, issues or organizations to be highlighted.

The Disaster Management Analyst will report to CDP’s Vice President and will work closely with CDP’s Director of Communications.

The Organization
The Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) is an exciting venture that is changing the face of emergency-related grant-making, moving it from a reactive and emotion-driven response, to one focused on increasing the effectiveness of the private donor’s dollar for the good of affected communities worldwide. By providing donors with the tools they need to make decisions to support disaster preparedness, relief and recovery, CDP brings more private philanthropic money to disaster response efforts and channels those funds in an innovative and strategic manner. CDP offers three distinct services to donors: 1) Promotion of learning and information through a website and interactive portal, webinars and convenings; 2) mechanisms for pooling resources with a unique preparedness, risk reduction and recovery focus; and 3) custom advisory services to help donors be more strategic in their giving.

Requirements• Graduate degree preferred in a related field; bachelors degree required
• Some professional work experience (1-2 years preferred)
• A strong interest in the humanitarian assistance field
• Extremely strong attention to detail and a strong sense of personal responsibility for one’s work
• Excellent research and writing skills and demonstrated ability to structure large amounts of information in a written document for web publication that is clear and easy to understand.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
• Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and PowerPoint
• Ability to manage and lead a complex project, to oversee and delegate to others on the team, and to communicate with a diverse set of stakeholders.
