Being a member of Oxfam GB Council of Trustees is an influential and challenging role. Trustees make a significant contribution to the current work and future direction of Oxfam by serving the organisation in its ongoing mission to prevent and relieve poverty and combat injustice and inequality. This is an opportunity to make your own contribution. Two vacancies arise this year due to the retirement of Trustees who reach the end of their tenure in October 2014.
The fact that you are reading this tells us that you have more than just a passing interest in our mission. To be appointed as a Trustee, however, an interest is not enough; you must be able to demonstrate a real commitment to, and passion for, Oxfam's aims, its values and its work. Oxfam GB is part of the international Oxfam confederation and fulfils much of its work through partners. Our Trustees are responsible for everything that Oxfam GB does, including providing advice on the strategic direction of the organisation and the delivery of our international programme and through Oxfam GB help to shape Oxfam International.
You will be the kind of person who thinks strategically and is happy to work in a collaborative style to deliver sustainable progress towards a bold mission. We particularly welcome candidates with previous experience of boards, or leadership and management of organisations or networks.
It would also be helpful if candidates had experience of work that is relevant to Oxfam’s ways of working, such as development or academic organisation, the voluntary sector or the public sector.
In 2014 we are seeking applications from individuals with sufficient time available to attend Council meetings and hopefully to participate actively on one or more of Council’s committees/sub-groups. The Council meetings involve a minimum time commitment of four two-day meetings per year. Membership of committees will involve some additional time, and we also ask Trustees to make a visit to Oxfam’s programme once every three years. Including preparation time, in an average year your commitment would be around 10 to 15 days for meetings with an additional 5 to 10 days for other occasional involvement (e.g. background reading, meeting stakeholders). Initial tenure is for three years.
To maintain and enhance the balance of Council, we are looking for Trustees with the following range of experience and insights:--Specialist experience in income generation through fundraising from individual donors – particularly in a large organisation, institution or charitySpecialist knowledge of influencing and/or rights-based development work and/or gender issues. We would particularly welcome applications from people who may be based in Asia or with strong connections to Asia.
This is an unpaid role but expenses are paid for attendance at Council meetings and other activities in connection with being a Trustee. Some employers may be prepared to encourage and enable Trusteeship as part of wider career development.
