Job Description and required qualification:
(Important Note – Position open to Kenyan nationals only)
Under the direct supervision of the Center Manager while working closely with the Head Cook, the incumbent will participate in the preparation and serving of meals at the safe house including the following functions;
? Oversee and participate in the preparation and cooking and serving of well balanced main meals to shelter residents.
? Determine quantities to be cooked and size of portions to be served, taking into account total population of the safe house.
? Check quantity and quality of stock received and notify Head Cook of deficiencies.
? Wash and clean floors, crockery, utensils, work surfaces and other kitchens equipment to ensure that the necessary hygiene and health and safety standards are maintained in the kitchen and dining room as appropriate.
? Ensure that the appropriate clothing, including head wear, is worn at all times whilst understanding kitchen duties.
? Co-operate fully with the statutory inspections and implement recommendation as appropriate.
? Perform other duties as required.
Requirements:
Education
Diploma in culinary from a recognized institution and a certification from the Ministry of Health to handle food stuff and items. Experience in working with a refugee assisting agency will be added advantage.
Working Station/Duration: The successful candidate will be stationed in Nairobi.
Skills and Competencies
o Ability to work easily and effectively with a wide range of people;
o Knowledge of techniques and methods of quantity food preparation and storage;
o Skill to prepare large quantity meals with a minimum of waste
o Knowledge of safety practices related to food preparation and use of commercial kitchen utensils and equipment;
o Knowledge of and ability to train others in sanitary methods of food handling, food preparation and cooking techniques;
o Passion and personal interest in people and providing assistance;
o Ability to communicate effectively
o Must have a heart of service and a demonstrable concern for the under privileged.
Experience – Applicant must have at least 5 years experience in working with a reputable institution.
Languages
Proficiency in English and Swahili
