Markaz Al-Kul is a safe, quiet and equipped space that provides activists with the tools and resources they need to execute their actions. A workspace and meeting point for anyone active in the Palestinian community who needs a free, comfortable and quiet sanctuary where they can think and plan.
Job Description and Responsibilities:
Markaz Al Kul is home to a library of information about East Jerusalem gathered by Grassroots Jerusalem’s staff and provided by community organizations and activists in Jerusalem. The Adminstration and Community Outreach Intern will be responsible for helping to maintain and grow Markaz Al-Kul’s connection to the communities of East Jerusalem, as well as our local partners, through the facilitation of events. Through community outreach projects, staying up to date with events around Jerusalem and helping to contribute creatively to how the center can be best used in the future, this intern position is ideal for any individual that enjoys community work and has strong organizational skills. Additional specific skills to this position include computer literacy, event planning and a strong commitment to supporting community members through a variety of creative ways. Markaz Al-Kul is the heart of the Grassroots Jerusalem project and therefore, must reflect not only the organizations commitment to human rights, but also supporting solutions and actions based on local community knowledge, rather than those that are the result of top down analysis of community needs. We are an organization that works to amplify the voices of the community and those working for social and political change from the bottom up. This position is an excellent opportunity to develop community organizational skills in a creative and dynamic environment. While all applications will be considered, preference will be given to those that can either commit to 6 months or have prior experience living in the region. Intern selection happens 4 times a year and the start period for each intern cycle is June, September, January, April.
Supervision:
Upon arrival in Jerusalem interns will undergo an orientation designed to not only introduce them to the layout of the city and the technologies essential to their project. The Markaz Al-Kul interns will work closely with the Manager of Markaz Al-Kul.
Compensation:
As this is an intern position there is no salary, but the Grassroots Jerusalem staff is committed to helping their interns take advantage of the variety of funding they qualify for through their educational institutions. Interns will be responsible for securing their own housing during their time in Jerusalem. Communication and work related travel expenses will be reimbursed during your stay.
