Chemonics seeks a global climate change science specialist for the anticipated five-year, USAID-funded Low Emission Development Strategy (LEDS) Project in Guatemala. The project will support USAID/Guatemala and the Guatemalan government to develop and implement a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within priority sectors of the nation's economy. It will assist the Guatemalan government to build institutional capacity for reducing the effects of climate change and mitigating GHG emissions. This work will include identifying ways to support the government in planning, design, policy development, and implementation of LEDS and promoting participatory processes with the private sector and civil society. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of analytical tools and practices, including emissions inventories development, economic and environmental modeling and analysis, sector-specific analysis, and data collection and management

  • Provide analytical support to help identify, evaluate, and prioritize actions and programs that could contribute to low emissions development, and help set long-term GHG emissions reduction goals

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in environmental science, forestry, climate change, ecology, sustainable agriculture, or other relevant field required; Ph.D. degree desired

  • Minimum eight years of experience working in climate change issues, such as low emission of greenhouse gases, national inventories, national and subnational base lines, marginal abatement curves or other economic tools, GCC modeling, and projections of business as usual and alternative scenarios

  • Knowledge of Guatemala's governmental sector, academia, NGOs, and civil society, as well as climate change policies, laws, development and management issues; knowledge of LEDS processes preferred

  • Knowledge of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change policies and guidelines, low carbon development, forest incentives and voluntary markets highly desirable

  • Excellent analytical, writing, communication, presentation, and training skills

  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, in both Spanish and English, required

  • Citizenship and/or authorization to work in Guatemala required
