Germany: UX developer | Asylos network

Organization: Asylos
Country: Germany
Closing date: 03 Oct 2013

Who we are:

Asylos is a network of volunteers providing research assistance to lawyers who represent refugees in their asylum claims. Asylos currently comprises 60 volunteers, based all over the world and working together to produce research for lawyers upon request. Asylos is legally based in France and soon in the UK, but most of our work happens online.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for someone who can advance the information and interaction architecture behind the Asylos teamspace which is our platform for internal communication and research management. So far we have largely relied on Google Apps. Google Site is our dashboard, Google Groups is our feed, Google Drive is our storage, Google Docs is the place we co-author our research, and Gmail is our mailbox. Google Spreadsheets store our core information, such as cases, sources, and contacts.

We have experimented with different task management and team communication tools such as Socialwok, Asana, Basecamp and Trello, and we make use of Doodle and Evernote. We’ve concluded that integration and usability are key. If tools need to be accessed in different places, aren’t harmonized in appearance, and are too many clicks away, they won’t be used by the critical mass of our researchers and will become obsolete. Our teamspace needs to have a straightforward structure that our volunteers can use easily, saving their time and energies for their real tasks of investigation and research.

Google Apps has proven to be a great platform and we will be able to upgrade to its non-profit version in the close future, but we are keen to learn about the potential of other solutions. The system we choose should allow gradual expansion; we could have 100 volunteers quite quickly. It should keep our data as secure as possible, as many asylum cases include confidential information. The ideal Asylos teamspace would combine the functions of an internal social network, a task manager, a CMS or research blueprint with toolbox, a CRM for lawyers and research sources, and a data archive.

Who you are:

An interaction designer who is able to understand the needs of a humanitarian research organisation, a developer with a talent to piece together a puzzle, or an information architect who has the talent to find the right developers.

What we need from you:

Ideas, comments, hints to persons we should talk to, a sketch on paper, a full-fledged concept, or a piece of code showing that you are able to build the links that could hold our different tools together. Although we are a volunteer organisation, we know that good code and design carry a price tag, and we have set aside funds for this purpose. We will send you a more exact wishlist upon request and are will be happy to talk to you about this project over the phone.
