The Director of Business Development provides overall direction and guidance for the execution of the institutional business development strategies that support Plan USA’s strategic mission and programming.

S/he collaborates closely with internal stakeholders to align the organization’s business development strategies with its strategic priorities related to program growth and impact. S/he takes an active role liaising with other organizational members of the Plan International Federation to identify opportunities for partnership, program growth and donor relationship cultivation. Supported by a dynamic team, the director oversees prospecting, capture, bid preparation and proposal development across Plan USA’s institutional donor portfolio including USG, foundations and multi-lateral accounts. The director provides overall direction and guidance for the continuous improvement of new business systems, specifically to support the prioritization, cultivation and stewardship of institutional donor relationships. S/he works closely with Plan International’s technical and programmatic staff to ensure high quality winning project designs that use cutting edge approaches to achieve impact and results. This position is based in our Washington DC office and is a 4 month fixed contract.

Reporting & Supervision

The BD Director reports to the Vice President of the International Programs Division and supervises a team with expertise in all aspects of new business development including market research, costing, bid tracking and proposal preparation. Internal to Plan, the director has frequent interaction with her/his peers in the International Programs Division as well as in other parts of the organization. The BD Director is also expected to collaborate closely with her/his counterparts throughout the Plan International Federation on the development of new opportunities and partnerships. Finally, the BD Director will have frequent and active contact with external donor representatives both at the headquarters and country levels.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Manages the daily operations of the unit including management and leadership of staff
• Develops strategy for unit, manages budgeting and forecasting
• Coordinates the review of business opportunities and determines bid priorities. Plans for allocation of resources for upcoming bids.
• Facilitates institutional donor identification, targeting relationship cultivation and stewardship in coordination with the Plan international Federation
• Guides the effective positioning of the organization’s new business development success at HQ and country levels, including intelligence gathering, marketing, and effective partnership negotiations
• Supervises full bid management process including the oversight to bid teaming strategies, positioning within bid teams, and proposal quality and responsiveness
• Ensures close collaboration between Business Development staff and all others within the organization contributing to the proposal development process
• Networks with business development professionals in peer organizations to build capacity and to enhance partnering opportunities
• Develops appropriate quality assurance and risk management process related to bid opportunity identification and preparation efforts

Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in relevant field such as business management, international development or public health
• 10+ years’ experience of relevant professional experience in new business development
• 10+ years of experience managing US government solicitations and funding mechanisms including prospecting and capture of USAID agreements, grants, and contracts. Candidates with required years of experience may be considered providing they can demonstrate satisfactory expertise with USG/USAID market with other complementary aspects of background and experience.
• 5+ years leadership and management experience
• Overseas experience strongly preferred
• Experience with multi-lateral and/or foundation prospecting and capture a plus
• Strong interpersonal skills and effective communications skills required
• A passion for Plan’s mission and the commitment to doing great work on behalf of our constituents
• Ability to travel internationally
• Must be eligible to work in the US
