POSITION DESCRIPTION – NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT INTERN
The Nuclear Disarmament Intern will provide support for WFUNA’s Peace and Security Program work – primarily focusing on the development of WFUNA’s nuclear disarmament program – in cooperation with key staff members.
WFUNA is currently revamping the nuclear disarmament program to extend beyond awareness-raising activities. The program will look to build online and offline platforms for information-sharing and capacity-building among the United Nations Associations and youth members.
The development of the program will include the following responsibilities:
Preparing to launch the disarmament program:
Fundraising: Identifying key donors, developing partnerships, and working with the Development team and WFUNA Staff to submit the project proposalCommunications: Maintaining the nuclear disarmament section of the website and sharing information as relevant to the United Nations Associations and WFUNA’s newsletter subscribersImplementing the disarmament program: Working to build the online portal and coordinate webinars and trainingsAdditional responsibilities will include:
Representing WFUNA at meetings, and staying updated on disarmament issues at the United Nations, including the Conference on Disarmament, and the First Committee of the General Assembly, and sharing relevant information with WFUNA’s extensive network and interested member UNAsReporting to the WFUNA Secretary-General on disarmament issues at the UNContributing both program-related and general content to the website, participating in a monthly-assigned news scan, and managing social media with a rotating staff memberAttending meetings of the NGO Committee on DisarmamentAssisting with administrative duties at the officeINTERN OPPORTUNITIES
The WFUNA Secretariat is located at UN Headquarters in New York. The Nuclear Disarmament Intern will have access to the United Nations building, conferences and events and resources such as the UN Library.
This position offers an excellent networking opportunity – the Nuclear Disarmament Intern will be able to make contact with UN staff, diplomats, UNA members, academics, and NGOs in the development community, and meet other interns from around the world who are working at the UN.
This position may be eligible for course credit from the academic institution in which the Nuclear Disarmament Intern is currently enrolled, provided the position description meets the criteria for credit set forth by the academic institution.
REQUIREMENTS
Prior coursework/academic background and/or practical experience in the field of disarmament is a must.
Preference will be given to candidates with prior UNA experience.
Familiarity with the UN system is beneficial. Strong writing and editing skills are necessary, as well as an advanced proficiency with MS Office.
Fluency in English is required; knowledge of a foreign language (especially French and Spanish) is a plus.
