POSITION DESCRIPTION:

ICAP, a program of the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, is seeking a Health Informatics Intern – Application Development to be part of the programming team in the Strategic Information (SI) unit. The intern will assist in the development of ICAP’s applications and health information systems.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Adapt the District Health Information System (DHIS) to meet ICAP-specific data collection and data dissemination needs.

  • Build data collection systems, based on open-source systems such as OpenMRS.

  • Design and develop custom-software systems to support research studies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Informatics, or related field.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to write SQL queries/routines and database development.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Access, Excel and VB Scripting.

  • Experience in developing supporting documentation and training non-technical users as necessary.

  • Critical thinking and analysis, verbal and written communication.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in developing supporting documentation and training non-technical users as necessary.

  • Intermediate proficiency in a high-level programming language (preferably Java) or a scripting language.

  • Experience working with DHIS and/or OpenMRS at a programmatic level.

  • Experience working with JasperReports.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

  • None

HOURS/SCHEDULE:

  • Up to 20 hours per week. Hours and schedule are flexible to accommodate student's class work.
