Job Description
University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE) and Namati seek qualified applicants for the position of Research Manager for a randomized control trial (RCT) in Liberia. The study explores the impact of the Community Land Protection Program (CLPP), a community land and natural resources management and community land titling program. Using a randomized control trial as well as community-collected qualitative and qualitative data, this study explores the effects of the CLPP on a range of community and individual outcomes, including community governance, natural resource management, conservation, conflict and productivity. The CLPP evaluation is currently in the first phase, with the launch of baseline survey planned for January 2014.The position offers an opportunity to gain first-hand field management experience in an organization undertaking cutting-edge development research. This position is currently open for January 2014 through April 2014 with the possibility of extended involvement as the program rolls out across different countries.
The resident research manager will need to be present full time in Liberia for the duration of the training and data collection for the baseline survey, which is anticipated to begin January 2014 and extend through April 2014. The Research Manager will work closely with the Principle Investigators and other field staff to perform a variety tasks including, but not limited to: overseeing pretesting of the survey and other data collection documents, managing an electronic data collection platform, conducting qualitative research, refining study design and surveying instruments, managing survey teams, negotiating contracts with enumerators and/or survey firms, checking and analyzing data, cleaning data and assisting in preliminary analysis, assisting in the writing of project reports and policy memos, coordinating with local partners, and supporting outreach to policymakers in country.
Desired Qualifications:
• A Master's degree in economics, social sciences, public policy, or related fields is required, enrollment in a PhD program in economics, political science, geography, or other related field preferred.
• Training in development economics.
• Experience living and conducting field research in a developing country.
• Prior work or volunteer experience in development in West Africa a plus.
• Excellent management and organizational skills
• Strong quantitative skills, including advanced econometrics and basic computer programming.
• Familiarity with electronic data collection platforms a plus; interest in learning required.
• The ability to present positions and to negotiate with senior officials.
• Fluency and excellent communication skills in English.
• Flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently as a team player.
• Demonstrated ability to manage high-level relationships with partner organizations.
• Knowledge of R and/or Stata.
• Familiarity with randomized controlled trials.
• A sense of humor and an ability to stay adaptive and flexible during tough and trying situations!
