Uganda: Partner, Women Entrepreneur Initiative

Mango Fund seeks to promote economic wellbeing and personal flourishing by supporting the growth of SMEs and their value chains within emerging markets. Our specific focus is on those businesses that leverage technology to perform value addition activities within their base countries. Our hypothesis is twofold: 1) local value addition keeps capital within local economies, and 2) the development of more advanced technical capabilities facilitates entry to more robust global markets.

Key responsibilities of role:

  • Senior Leadership – Help set overall strategy and manage operation in East Africa
  • Networking/Partnership Development – Form relationships and partnerships with organizations that focus on women entrepreneurs
  • Deal Sourcing – Identify women entrepreneurs appropriate for investment
  • Due Diligence – Evaluate potential investments and develop investment proposals
  • Portfolio Management –Monitor entrepreneurs’ progress and hold them accountable to their commitments; Work with the rest of the Mango team to manage internal administration of the portfolio.
  • Consulting/Technical Assistance – Support entrepreneurs to help ensure their success; Systems development, financial management, strategy consulting, etc.

Objectives for the first year:

  1. Prove that there are strong women entrepreneurs in Uganda ready for growth investment
  2. Establish a strong network to enable Mango to connect to new women-owned businesses
  3. Make 5-10 successful investments in women’s businesses

Profile of candidate:

  • Demonstrated leadership and initiative
  • Passion to serve women entrepreneurs in East Africa
  • 4-6 years of experience in a related field, 2 of which in East Africa or very similar context
  • Skill set appropriate for investment fund management and small business consulting in East Africa, including strong analytical and critical reasoning skills.
  • Education: preferred MBA or otherwise related graduate degree
  • Willing to commit three years to living and working in Kampala, Uganda

United States of America: Darfur Women Action Group Intern

The Darfur Women Action Group is taking a unique approach to fighting and preventing genocide. DWAG believes that empowering the most affected and building strong leadership among those who are historically excluded to enable them to lead and foster positive change in their communities is the most crucial approach to end genocide sustainably.

DWAG is current seeking interested interns and/or volunteers who are passionate about advancing the goals we are trying to achieve.

Internships are available for undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, or others interested who are available for at least 20 – 30 hours per week for duration of at least 2-3 months (Sept.– Dec. 2013). Internship program areas include:

  • Development intern/volunteer

Development intern/volunteer

Major Responsibilities:

  • Support the identification of potential donors and supporters.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with foundations, organizations, and individual supporters.
  • Manage donation entry and tracking process. Analyze trends in donations, gift giving, and fundraising.
  • Assist with grant proposals including researching potential grants, editing proposal reports, and tracking submission deadlines.
  • Become familiar with fundraising opportunities and all other aspects of the organization.
  • Strong writing and communication skills are a plus.
  • Assist in recruiting supporters and expanding DWAG supporters circle.

Social Media and Multi-media intern

Major Responsibilities:

  • Maintain all social media accounts with relevant and up to date information concerning the organization and related news.
  • Be aware of current opportunities for advertising and content management on the internet.
  • Utilize social networks to maintain contact with current and future supporters as well as similar organizations.
  • Assist with drafting press releases and statements.
  • Monitor social media websites to track trends and impact.
  • Assist with videotaping and editing as needed.
  • Strong writing and communication skills required.

Campaigning, Advocacy & Outreach intern

Major Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the collaboration between DWAG and its partners and stakeholders.
  • Assist research associates in tracking related news and areas of opportunity for intervention.
  • Maintain blog for DWAG website.
  • Attend meetings, seminars, and workshops to remain up to date on information involving armed conflicts and government involvement.
  • Assist in campaign development and implementation.
  • Assist in expanding DWAG’s reach to the largest audiences.

Notes:

  • DWAG interns works for 20 hour a week or more as needed
  • Remote working environment option is available for those who live outside of the DC area

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Advanced degree in a relevant field (economics, gender, development studies, public policy, political sciences, and human rights).
• At least 10 years of experience working in economic development and/or relevant area (women’s economic empowerment, gender and women’s rights, monitoring and evaluation).
• Previous experience in developing strategies and plans
• In-depth and wide-ranging knowledge of development issues and multi-sectoral approaches.

Project/Proposal Summary:
Women in Transition (WIT) will invest in opportunities that enable education women to enter and advance into decision making positions in Afghanistan’s public, private and civil society sectors. For young women with at least a high school education, WIT will provide access to advanced professional development opportunities through four specific practice areas under the WIT umbrella: 1) Women in the Economy, 2) Women’s Rights Groups and Coalitions, 3) Women in Government, 4) Women’s Leadership Development. This is a five year project based in Kabul, Afghanistan. Position Summary: The Women’s Rights Groups and Coalitions (WRGC) Component Director will manage all activities under this $40 million program component, under the overall management of the Chief of Party. The purpose of the WRGC component is to support activist women’s groups and coalitions to influence public policies and social practices for the benefit Afghan women. The program will do so by providing capacity building in the areas of gender analysis, strategic advocacy and communications, outreach and public awareness/education, coalition building, research, organizational development, managerial and financial management, and fundraising. The Component Director also will oversee the implementation of grants to support related outreach, activism and research.

Responsibilities: • Design and manage the implementation of all component activities, ensuring full collaboration among international and domestic partners;• Manage the recruitment and supervision of component staff and consultants;• Establish and manage all aspects of grant mechanisms; • Nurture coalitions of activist organizations towards sustainable, strategic advocacy on behalf of the rights of Afghan girls and women, focusing on impact in law, policy and practice; • Ensure robust monitoring of component activities and impact; • Ensure timely donor reporting on all component activities and results;• Manage component budget and expenditures;• Coordinate with donor counterparts, responding to all component related requests as required;• Participate in senior management processes and decision-making.

Qualifications: • Demonstrated management experience on programs related to women’s rights and civil society advocacy and coalition-building;• Substantive expertise in human rights, women’s rights, and diverse strategic advocacy methods; • Experience designing and implementing training and related materials for civil society;• Experience in Afghanistan or other conflict-affected and/or Islamic contexts, and understanding of the challenges to women’s rights faced in these contexts;• Master’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience;• Experience with USAID or other donors;• Ability to live in Kabul and travel within the country;• Outstanding spoken and written communication skills in English; proficient Pashto/Dari preferred.
